The outdated 3-3-3 guideline
The 3-3-3 rule is a general guideline for adopting dogs, suggesting that a dog will feel overwhelmed in the first three days, start to settle in over three weeks, and feel secure in their new home after three months. However, this rule may be insufficient for successfully integrating dogs with trauma or anxiety because it oversimplifies the adjustment process and does not account for the individual needs and past experiences of each dog.
Dogs from shelters or with negative experiences may exhibit signs of trauma, such as separation anxiety, which was observed in 85.2% of adopted dogs after four months, according to a study using the Canine Behavioral Assessment and Research Questionnaire (C-BARQ). The high return rate of adopted dogs within the first few weeks could be due to adopters' expectations not aligning with the reality of the dog's behavior and adjustment period.
C-TBRI The new Trauma- informed framework
A Trust-Based Relational Intervention (TBRI) framework, adapted for dogs C-TBRI could potentially offer a more individualized and trauma-informed approach. TBRI is originally designed for children, particularly those with a history of trauma, and focuses on meeting the child's physical and emotional needs, building trust, and correcting behavior through nurturing guidance rather than punishment. I’ve been using a form of TBRI in over 600 cases, it has not been scientifically researched for dogs, but it is researched for children, therefore the principles could be adapted to address the needs of traumatized dogs by:
1. Ensuring the dog's basic needs for safety, nutrition, and physical activity are met.
2. Establishing a predictable and nurturing environment to foster a sense of security.
3. Gradually introducing new experiences and training in a way that builds confidence and trust.
By adapting TBRI principles for dogs, adopters could provide a more supportive environment that acknowledges the dog's past traumas and promotes healing and positive behavior changes over time. This approach could potentially reduce the likelihood of dogs being returned to shelters and improve long-term adoption outcomes.
